Don't wait until you need air conditioning in hot
weather to find out that your vehicle is low on Freon. You need your
air conditioning even in the winter.
Did you know every time you turn on your defroster,
your air conditioning compressor must run to dry the humid air
before the air is directed to the windshield?
The air conditioning system actually removes the
humidity from the passenger compartment to make the vehicle cool in
the summer and keep the windows from icing up in the winter.
Low Freon may indicate a leak. However, it is normal for some Freon
to escape. Movement
of the vehicle's engine, and the expansion and contraction of the
materials that make up the air conditioning system, and the
variations in the operating speeds of the compressor small amounts
Your air conditioning system should be checked for
proper operation at least once a year. Insufficient Freon and oil in
the system can damage the compressor and other parts of the system
resulting in very costly repairs. Maintaining the proper amount of
Freon ensures the refrigerant oil is being carried through the
system to lubricate moving parts and seals in the system.
Willoughby Hills Auto Repair has the most sophisticated air conditioning and
leak detection equipment available.
Letís talk about
air conditioning service and repair issues for the Northeast Ohio area. Most of us
living in cities such as Willoughby Hills, Mayfield, Kirtland and
other parts of Cleveland, we donít give our air
conditioning a second thought as long as itís making cold air. But
itís a complex and expensive system that we should think about
before it starts blowing hot air.
The refrigerant in the air
conditioner contains a special oil that lubricates and
cools the A/C parts. This oil is eventually used up. Your air
conditioner still makes cold air, but the parts donít have oil to
protect them and they wear out faster than they should so itís
important to service the air conditioner as recommended
by your Northeast Ohio service center.
Replacing old refrigerant has another benefit:
refrigerant tends to gather moisture and become corrosive. That
causes leaks in the system which can be expensive to repair. Fresh
refrigerant protects the air conditioning components and keeps the
system operating at peak efficiency so it doesnít have to work as
hard to keep you cool.
Even with regular service
A/C parts can just wear out. Normal wear and tear eventually
gets to all moving parts.
Addressing early problems can save on more
extensive repairs down the road. For instance, a common failure is
the clutch that turns the compressor on and off. If you can take
care of a bad A/C clutch when it first starts
having problems, you may be able to save the compressor. Wait too
long and youíll have to replace both.
Check your ownerís manual or ask
your Northeast Ohio service advisor at Willoughby Hills Auto
Repair for service recommendations. And if youíre hearing
strange sounds when your air conditioning turns on, or if it just
isnít as cold as it used to be, have us give it the once over see
what itíll take to keep you cool.
Air Blend Box
Willoughby Ohio drivers push a few buttons or turn some knobs, and
voila, they have balmy air blowing on their feet or cool air
conditioned air chilling their face. How does all that happen? Well,
itís all thanks to the air blend box. This box lives behind your
dash and brings just the right temperature of air right where you
break it down. First there is the blower fan that circulates the air
through the heating/air conditioning system. The fan can blow at
different speeds, depending on how much hot or cold air is required
to be comfortable. The blend box can either convey fresh air from
outside, or recirculate air from inside the cabin. Willoughby Ohio
car owners often choose to recirculate air when first starting the
vehicle until it starts to either cool down or warm up.
The next thing the blend box does is bring airflow over the heater
core to warm the air, or over the air conditioner evaporator core to
chill it Ė or a blend of hot and cold to get it just right. From
there the blend box can direct the air out into the passenger
compartment through the floor vents, the panel vents, the defroster,
or a combination. All of this allows Willoughby car owners to
customize the climate just the way they like it.
Some vehicles have different climate control zones, like one for the
driver and one for the passenger Ė or even more zones for the back
seat. Additional blend boxes are used for this. Climate controls
could be manually adjusted or computer controlled depending on your
The blower motor and all of the little actuator motors that open and
close the various blend doors can fail and need to be replaced. Most
new vehicles come with a cabin air filter. This filter cleans the
air before it gets into the blend box. If you neglect changing the
cabin air filter, it can get clogged, smelly, and even allow mildew
and other microorganisms to build up in the blend box.
Willoughby Hills Auto Repair in Willoughby Hills Ohio can perform a
heating/air conditioning system cleaning service that will clean and
disinfect the system, restoring a fresh clean scent. If you are not
getting enough hot or cold air, Willoughby Hills Auto Repair can
check your system, diagnose the cause and set things right. And
donít forget to replace
the cabin air filter on
schedule. In addition, if you live and drive in dusty Northeast Ohio
conditions or where there is a lot of pollen or other pollutants,
you may need to replace your cabin air filter more frequently.
