Six Signs Your Car Needs New Shocks and Struts

The shocks and struts are part of your vehicle’s suspension system. They play an important role in the handling and comfort of your automobile. As with any other auto part, the shocks and struts won’t last forever, and Willoughby Hills Auto Repairs lists six signs it’s time for a replacement of either or both parts below. Please note that your vehicle might have shocks or struts or a combination of the two.

1. Uncomfortable Ride

The most common sign that you need new shocks and struts is a bumpy ride. These suspension parts are designed to absorb uneven road conditions so you don’t feel them. If you suddenly feel as if you’re driving a bounce-house, you probably have worn shocks and/or struts.

2. Difficulty Steering

Worn shocks and struts will also make it harder to steer your car, truck, or C/SUV. You might feel your automobile lean as you turn, or lunge forward or backward when you start and stop. All of these things suggest the shocks and struts are worn and this wear is affecting your vehicle’s handling.

3. Braking Issues

Worn shocks and struts will make braking feel different. As we mentioned above, you might feel your vehicle lunge forward or backward when you stop. This means that the shocks and struts cannot hold your vehicle’s body steady through the acceleration or displacement motions.

4. Leaking Parts

Shocks and struts won’t leak fluid onto your garage floor but you can reach up behind the wheel and inspect them to see if there is any oil on them. If there is, it might not be the shocks or struts; you might have a fluid leak dripping down onto them. They, too, could be leaking, however.

5. Tire Tread Wear

Part of the shocks and struts’ responsibility is to keep your tires evenly on the road. As they wear down, it’s harder for them to do this and, consequently, the tires bounce. The bouncing tires will wear down unevenly, leaving patches of tread wear that look like scallops or circles.

6. Maintenance Schedule

Finally, as we mentioned at the beginning, your shocks and struts only have so many miles in them. Generally, they should be replaced every 50,000 miles. If your owner’s manual lists a different mileage milestone or you notice any of the signs above, however, have them inspected.
